Outside the Code

What I do when I'm not shipping features. The same focus and energy, different arena.

Basketball

Having played five years of varsity basketball at UBC, I still get to the court whenever possible. Whether that is a pickup run, a gym session, or coaching younger players, the game teaches things no classroom can: competing under pressure, leading when it counts, and moving on from a bad quarter without carrying it into the next one. That mindset travels everywhere.

Soccer

I grew up with it. My dad played through his college career and passed the love of the game on early. By senior year of high school, I had to choose between soccer and basketball. Basketball won, but soccer never really left. I still get on the pitch when I can, and follow everything off it. If there is a match on, there is a good chance I am watching.

Watching Sports

NBA is a year-round thing. Following the narratives, the rivalries, the trades, and the playoff runs. NFL and NHL are more casual, but once the playoffs hit for either, I am locked in. There is something about live sports that nothing else replicates: high stakes, real moments, partly scripted.

Travelling

Travelling periodically to freshen the mind and experience how other people live is something I genuinely value. New cultures, new environments, new perspectives. I try to get somewhere new every few months, it resets everything and makes one better at everything else.

Video Games

PS5 is where the decompression happens. EA FC Pro Clubs, Ultimate Team, swinging through New York in Spider-Man, or picking up whatever drops next and not putting it down until it is done. Gaming is a legit way for me to unwind, compete, and be a kid for a few hours.

Friends and Social

Good people and good energy are irreplaceable. Wing nights, nights out in the city, or just a low-key hangout with the crew. It all matters. Having built a solid circle in Calgary and beyond, with friends spread across different cities, being around driven, fun people outside of work is what keeps everything balanced.

Baking

Baking has a lot in common with coding. Follow the process, measure precisely, and the result speaks for itself. Get it wrong and you know immediately. Get it right and there is nothing more satisfying. Cake, cookies, desserts. The kitchen is a good place for me to slow down, focus, and produce something sweet.

Grilling

Grilling is engineering for food. The right temperature, the right timing, the right amount of patience. My specialty is fall-off-the-bone saucy ribs. I like suya too. Always exploring different meats, cuts, and flavour combinations to see what works. When it all comes together, nothing beats a slow cook on a good day.
